Glimpse of History: Huffing and puffing and paving in Cranford

According to the Cranford Historical Society, the machine is being used in front of the John Pierson property on the avenue which had been a single-lane dirt road. Pavementinteractive.org points out that sheet asphalt placed on a concrete base became popular during the mid-1800s; the first such pavement placed in the U.S. was in Newark in 1870.
