Paterson police catch halfway house escapee convicted in 2008 homicide case

Authorities tracked down a 22-year-old fugitive on Friday who escaped from a halfway house in Newark seven weeks ago while serving a jail sentence on charges connected to a 2008 homicide, officials said. The suspect, Charles Umstead, was caught hiding under the plywood platform of a bed in a second-floor apartment on Belmont Avenue in Haldeon, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.
