N.J. fisherman charged in shooting death of pilot whale

A Cape May fisherman who allegedly shot a pilot whale from the deck of his commercial fishing boat - causing a drawn-out and likely excruciating death for the marine mammal - surrendered to U.S. Marshals on Thursday and could face a year in prison and a $100,000 fine if found guilty. Daniel Archibald, 27, is charged with one count of violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act and was released on $10,000 unsecured bond after appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge James B. Clark III in federal court in Newark, N.J. An 11-foot, 740-pound pilot whale died shortly after washing ashore in Allenhurst, Monmouth County, on Sept.
