NEWARK - As the trial began today in the May 2011 fatal shooting of an off-duty Newark police officer, prosecutors claimed the accused murderer, Rasul McNeil-Thomas, opened fire at a city restaurant to shoot a woman involved in an earlier brawl at his home. But the defense argued police officers tampered with evidence and coached that woman to bolster their case against McNeil-Thomas.
