US politician calls for billion dollar rail upgrade between New Jersey and New York

NEWARK, New Jersey - New Jersey's highest-ranking elected Democrat and a potential candidate for governor in 2017, Stephen Sweeney, has called for the re-assessment of a project to replace a rail tunnel to New York City. The existing tunnels, which are more than 100 years old, run at capacity, causing tie-ups at peak commuter times for New Jersey Transit, which shares the tracks with the national passenger rail system.
