NEWARK - Mayor Ras Baraka on Wednesday strongly urged state legislators to approve a deal to sell Saint Michael's Medical Center to a private healthcare firm, saying failure to keep the hospital open would further a sense of inequality between Newark and more affluent communities. Speaking at a Town Hall meeting focused on healthcare at George Washington Carver Elementary School, the mayor said many Newark residents already struggled to receive access to the most basic medical care, and that the closure of one facility could have far-reaching repercussions for the city's most vulnerable citizens.
